Scan a Receptacle Label

If your mailer creates its own Receptacle IDs and labels using a non-GSS system, click the Scan Receptacle link to open the Scan Receptacle page.

On this screen, scan the receptacle label. The receptacle ID appears in the Receptacle ID field. Enter the Piece Count, Weight, and Package Shape for the receptacle. The Weight should be the  net weight (gross weight minus tare weight) in pounds. These fields are required if your facility manifests its IPA and ISAL packages.

For manifesting mailers, when the submitted receptacle ID's foreign office of exchange maps to more than one destination country, you will be prompted to choose the destination country from the list.

Click the Add Receptacle button to add it to the shipment.

Important Information

Each receptacle ID must be unique and consist of 24 characters comprising discrete, required pieces of information. GSS validates each portion of the receptacle ID, necessitating that the information included be both accurate and in the correct order.

The following table shows what information should be included at each position in the receptacle ID:

Mailer Permit Number

The first 10 digits include the mailer’s 5-digit ZIP for the post office of account followed by the 5-digit permit number, padded with leading zeros if necessary.

Example: 1143000924

For shippers mailing through a consolidator, the 5-digit ZIP should be the consolidator’s post office of account.

Receptacle Type

The following codes can be passed based on the Receptacle type.  Valid values are:

L = Letter tray containing letter-size items
F = Flat tray containing flat-size items
E = Sack containing package-size items or M-bag
B = Sack containing mixed format items (letter-size, flat-size, and/or package-size) for price groups 15 – 19 only

Note:  You must obtain preauthorization to use the following codes: C, D, G, H, I, and J.  Call or e-mail the GSS Help desk to be routed to the USPS pre-authorization contact.

C = Sack containing letter-size items

G = Pallet/Gaylord containing letter-size items
H = Pallet/Gaylord containing flat-size items

Unique Identification Number

The mailer selects the final 8 digits of the receptacle ID.  They should be unique to the receptacle.

*If the service "M" (M-BAG) is selected, then Receptacle Type "B" (Bag) is required and will be automatically selected by GSS.
